The battle system in FF2 is almost identical to FF1. It is a turn-based combat in which the player chooses the character's actions before each "round", then watches the mayhem unfold afterwards. All the basic commands are included, like FIGHT, MAGIC, ITEM, and RUN.
ROWS - One change was the appearance of rows. Characters and enemies can be in either the front row or back row in battle. Characters placed in the back row are safe from physical attacks, and can only be hit with special attacks or magic.
ITEMS - Another change was that each character has his or her own inventory for battle. In order to use items in battle, a character must equip the desired item in his or her inventory. This added strategy, and a focus to being prepared.
TARGETING - Also, the target of a character's attack or spell doesn't have to be the enemy. Characters are allowed to attack party members or themselves, or even heal the enemy. This also means that characters can cast CURE on those pesky undead monsters, or 'beat themselves up' to gain HP.
